Ritsos uses nationalistic language in Epitaphios to appeal to the tradition of Greek pride. Basically what this means is that in Greece, national pride is a big deal, heightened by the need for a faith in the nation when they were controlled by the Ottoman Empire. Because of that, the majority of Greeks had a strong sense of nationalistic pride.

2009-01-17 At their best, Ritsos' poems, "in their directness and with their sense of anguish, are moving, and testify to the courage of at least one human soul in conditions which few of us have faced or would have triumphed over had we faced them," as Philip Sherrard noted in the Washington Post Book World. Notable works by Ritsos include Tractor (1934), Pyramids (1935), Epitaph (1936), and Vigil (1941–1953). We have selected here a collection of his best poems like Moonlight Sonata and his landmark poem Epitaphios, published in 1936, which broke with the shape of Greek traditional popular poetry and expressed in clear and simple language a message of the unity of all people. Using a number of images, symbolisms and metaphors, Ritsos expresses an optimistic view, a hope that is not naive or romantic but is based on the right of the struggle regardless of its outcome.
